Franklin Delano Roosevelt was one of my distant ancestors. In fact knowing that I am a descendant of one of the greatest president of the United States inspire me a lot and produced a new outlook in life than the usual pessimist me. Now, a new beginning and a new personality seems to arise in the Philippines. A person named Nicanor Perlas had just recently unveiled his willingness to run and become the next President of the Republic of the Philippines. When I first heard about this I though that it was a preposterous idea that someone unknown and never heard of could actually run as president. Then, I get a chance to meet this person and everything had changed from thereon.

Nicanor Perlas Speaks at Pepe Goes to Market

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945), often referred to by his initials FDR, was the 32nd President of the United States. He was a central figure of the 20th century during a time of worldwide economic crisis and world war. Elected to four terms in office, he served from 1933 to 1945 and is the only U.S. president to have served more than two terms.

Now, it seems to me we have an FDR in the making. A person who runs not because of personal interest but more because of his love for his country. A person who is willing to risk all in order to bring back our country to the rightful place in the world.

Since the EDSA Revolution we have seen many promises of great hope for the people of the Philippines but we have seen less and less as the years go by. During the current presidency we have seen the least respect for the will of the people and we had experience the greatest poverty ever. Our rights are trampled upon again and again and we are being served by elected officials who win in office because of guns, goons and gold.

We need to unite and pick up ourselves. We need to change our attitudes and our mindset and principles. We need to see more beyond ourselves and we need a leader whom we can count on as an example of the aspiration of our people.

This aspiration and model is what I see in the personality of Nicanor "Nick" Perlas if he indeed became the next President of the Philippines. A man who in his life has dedicated himself towards the service of his fellowmen and of protecting nature and the environment.

Countless times he had demonstrated his capacity to lead and mobilize people. As a student he mobilized many to make policy changes in education. As a young leader he mobilized people to stop nuclearization of the Philippines during Marcos era. As an activist he successfully depended farmers against harmful pesticide sprays and had been one of those instrumental to the removal of Estrada from office opting for a better Philippines.

But the hope for a better Philippines after Estrada did not came because we are now hunted by corruption and depression not only financially but a depression within each and every Filipino. We are loosing our identity as a people and our morale as a nation.

“Throughout the nation men and women, forgotten in the political philosophy of the Government, look to us here for guidance and for more equitable opportunity to share in the distribution of national wealth... I pledge you, I pledge myself to a new deal for the American people... This is more than a political campaign. It is a call to arms." said Roosevelt during his first campaign for the US presidency.

Now, at a time greater than ever it is also a call to arms. A call not to the arms that can kill but arms which can change the Philippines. Arms which does not mean weapons of destruction but weapons who are people... people who can dedicate their lives to changing this country towards each and every small and big things that they can contribute.
