I was browsing Google and I was amazed by the artwork made on the logo. Then when I checked it out I found out that it was 400 years ago that Galileo invented his version of the telescope. Well, Galileo was not the inventor of the telescope per se since Hans Lippershey in the Netherlands in 1608, invented the first practical telescope. However, it was Galileo Galilei in the following year, that made a telescope with about 3x magnification. He later made others with up to about 30x magnification. With this improved device he could see magnified, upright images on the earth – it was what is now known as a terrestrial telescope, or spyglass

So what is the significance of this day?

Well if not for Galileo's invention astronomy would not be as cool as it was today. Why? Well just imagine if you will just rely on your naked eye. Through your naked eye you cannot see the beauty of Jupiter, of constellations, of galaxies and other heavenly bodies which are millions and millions of years away.

So let us thank Galileo Galilei for his brilliant mind and for his great contribution to Astronomy and the advancement of mankind.
