THE OUIJA EXPERIMENT Movie Review

It was another movie day at SM Cinema, this time at Cinema 6 of SM Megamall.  The movie is entitled "The Ouija Experiment."  The title itself made me realized that it was a horror movie which would be creepy and would drive shiver into my bones.  Thus, together with Dee Jocson, Mico Villarica and Haruhi Misaki we watched the movie.

The storyline of the movie revolves around five friends, with Michael owning the infamous board.  They decided one day to use the board and see if it would work while another friend and Calvin's girlfriend will be filming the whole event for their online TV which roughly has 12 subscribers.  In this experiment they ought to drive more viewers for their channel.

Michael sets out the rules for the Ouija board including the golden rule which is to always say goodbye or else the realm of the spirits would open up to the living world.  All went lose when Calvin;s girlfriend asked questions about Calvin and the ghosts in the board revealed some sort of infidelity.

The group of friends made contact with three ghosts namely: Gracie, Joseph and Liza.  Liza told everyone that Joseph is bad and to beware with him, however, the real story would reveal something else.  One by one strange things happen and each one of them will become victims to these ghosts.

Here is my movie review and ratings for THE OUIJA EXPERIMENT:

STORY:  6.  It revolves around friendship, love and the Ouija board.  The story for me is a bit shallow and fails to go into certain things about the board.  The story also is somewhat questionable since asking the board about something done by a person previously would be impossible to yield a correct answer unless that ghost had been with the person during that period which I doubt.

CHARACTER:  6.  I would say that the acting at some point is horrible and at some point is really exaggerated but since the movie is supposed to be somewhat reality then I could say that people are mostly overacting when they see ghosts and other stuff.

COHERENCE:  6.  I wonder what's the link between Calvin and his girlfriend turning into somewhat like a Zombie state after falling victim to one of the ghosts.  The sudden awakening of his girlfriend near the ending is also insignificant.  I am not familiar with the rules of the Ouija Board but despite many violations the spirits are free yet they still talk to them and this is the first time I saw 3 spirits being called into one board.  Is it possible or not?  Another thing is the fact that "Gracie", the ghost of the young girl is supposed to be good but in one setting she acts as if she is pure evil and would do something bad.

DEPTH:  7.  The movie failed to go deeper into the Ouija board itself plus it failed to establish the main ingredient of such a horror movie which is to shock the audience, at least for me.  During the screening, other people were like screaming and shouting as if they were afraid and to bMUe honest I had not been afraid while watching this movie.

MUSIC:  N/A.  I would just say this rating is not applicable for this movie since they did not use any distinctive music.

VISUAL EFFECTS:  6.  The effects were common and is easy to be done.  During the duration of the movie they rely on creepy sounds, sudden movements and the element of surprise.

POPULARITY:  8.  I would give this movie an 8 since I think many people had been curious because of its title.

RECOMMENDATION:  8.  It is still a good movie if you want to see something a bit of horror and yet at some point would be funny and well at some point you would get a little bit irritated with some of the characters.

TOTAL RATING The Ouija Experiment:  67.14%

So there you go folks.  I would still watch this movie if I were you since it is a pretty decent film given the budget of only US1,000.  I hope that there would be a second part for this with better and deeper plot and more of the horror thing.
